MBN's 'Under Fifteen' Continues Amid Controversy Over Child Sexualization

MBN is moving forward with its new girl group audition program, 'Under Fifteen' (언더피프틴), despite facing backlash regarding the potential sexualization of minors. On March 22, the production team stated that all participants have voluntarily agreed to join the program with parental consent. They emphasized that strict guidelines have been followed to protect the underage contestants during filming. The team has worked closely with guardians to determine appropriate outfits and styling, ensuring that practice sessions do not exceed 35 hours per week, with constant supervision from both guardians and staff.

The production team expressed their concern over the distress caused to the young participants and their families due to the ongoing controversies, especially before the show's premiere. They reiterated their commitment to supporting the dreams of the contestants, who have dedicated over six months of hard work to the project, and promised to take extra care to avoid any further issues.

'Under Fifteen' aims to discover K-POP prodigies under the age of 15 and is set to air its first episode on March 31. The show plans to cultivate a girl group from 59 talented girls aged 15 and under from over 70 countries. Notably, Kim Seol (김설), who played Jin-joo in the popular drama 'Reply 1988' (응답하라 1988), is among the contestants, generating significant interest.

However, following the release of teasers and trailers, concerns have been raised about the potential sexualization of the child participants. In response, MBN acknowledged the public's worries on March 21 and stated that they would thoroughly review the program's content and broadcasting plans before making an official announcement. Despite this, the production team has proceeded with the teaser release, indicating that the controversy is likely to continue.
