MBC's 'What Do You Do?' Celebrates 'Christmas in the 13th Month' with Star-Studded Winter Song Remakes
On January 11, MBC's popular variety show 'What Do You Do?' (놀면 뭐하니?) aired a special episode titled 'Christmas in the 13th Month.' The episode featured hosts Yoo Jae-suk, Ha Ha, Joo Woo-jae, Park Jin-joo, Lee Yi-kyung, and Mi-joo as they gathered eight winter song mates for a remake project.
The first guests were John Park (존박) and Ailee (에일리). Joo Woo-jae shared that he had met John Park two days prior with his close friend Byun Woo-seok, expressing his surprise at learning songs in a coin karaoke room. Ailee, who is set to marry her fiancé Choi Si-hoon in April, mentioned that he affectionately calls her 'Princess Ye-jin.' She also recounted how their relationship began at a g.o.d concert. John Park smiled, saying, "It's a good time." Yoo Jae-suk was shocked to learn that John Park is married with a daughter, asking if he had a small wedding, to which John replied, "I had a medium wedding," eliciting laughter.
Next, NMIXX's Haewon (해원) and ZB1's Seungheon (승헌쓰) joined the show. Seungheon, known as 'Korean Grande,' revealed his introverted side, stating, "I only go crazy when I'm alone." Requests for Haewon to showcase her vocal prowess flooded in, and she delivered a powerful performance, prompting Joo Woo-jae to cheer, "Even singers with strong vocal cords can't replicate this flavor!"
The soulful duo Kim Jo-han (김조한) and KCM also made an appearance. Lee Yi-kyung attempted to jog Kim Jo-han's memory by recalling a time they shared pizza, but his efforts fell flat, leading the others to lament, "Why does Yi-kyung only ever have unrequited love?" Ailee chimed in, noting that Kim Jo-han had greeted her as if they were old friends, despite it being their first meeting.
As the atmosphere of the 'Christmas in the 13th Month' party grew, each guest recommended winter songs to sing together. Haewon was taken aback by a video of her agency's CEO Park Jin-young performing 'Summer Jingle Bells' passionately. Ailee and Haewon performed 'I Will Go to You Like the First Snow,' moving Mi-joo to tears. Ailee also showcased her impressive high notes with Mariah Carey's 'All I Want for Christmas Is You,' while Yoo Jae-suk suggested Lee Jung-seok's 'The First Snow Is Coming,' reminiscent of Davichi's '8282,' to elevate the festive spirit. John Park entertained with Michael Bublé's 'Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,' creating a jazz bar vibe that had Yoo Jae-suk exclaiming, "Michael Park-ble!"
The episode concluded with surprise guests, actor Song Gun-hee (송건희) and national fencing representative Oh Sang-wook (오상욱). Song Gun-hee, who stars in the drama 'Jumping Over the Wall' (선재 업고 튀어), showcased his unexpected singing talent with a romantic tone reminiscent of first love. He revealed his background as a trainee, surprising Yoo Jae-suk and Ha Ha. When Yoo Jae-suk inquired about his agency, Ha Ha jokingly suggested, "You should try being a singer!"
Oh Sang-wook captivated the audience with his smooth voice and tall stature. Yoo Jae-suk welcomed him to the entertainment industry, while Oh Sang-wook expressed his desire to balance his sports career with entertainment activities this year, as there are no Olympics or Asian Games. Yoo Jae-suk and Ha Ha humorously self-deprecated, saying, "They look like celebrities. Ha Ha, we don't look like celebrities at all!"
The episode recorded a viewership rating of 4.4% in the metropolitan area, with a 2049 rating of 2.9%, making it the top-rated Saturday variety show. The peak moment, reaching a 6.3% rating, was when Song Gun-hee began singing, drawing attention for his impressive vocal skills and romantic tone, solidifying his status as a rising star in the industry.
