MBC's Response to Workplace Bullying Allegations Following the Tragic Death of Announcer Oh Yoanna

In light of the growing allegations of workplace bullying surrounding the late Oh Yoanna, a former MBC weathercaster, Kwon Tae-sun, the chairman of the Korea Broadcasting System Promotion Association (방송문화진흥회), has issued a statement. On February 4, Kwon expressed his condolences on the association's website, stating, "First and foremost, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Oh Yoanna, who left this world at such a young age."
Kwon revealed that he was shocked to learn during the Lunar New Year holiday that Oh's tragic death was reportedly linked to workplace bullying. He emphasized the importance of confirming the facts but noted that it is already disheartening and regrettable that such issues have arisen within a public broadcaster like MBC.
He stated, "I immediately sought to verify the relevant facts from MBC and listened to their response plan, after which I raised the necessity for a comprehensive investigation. MBC has reported that it will establish an investigative committee, including external experts, to begin the inquiry promptly."
Kwon expressed hope that the committee would objectively and fairly investigate the various issues currently raised and quickly uncover the truth. He added, "I hope this investigation process will help alleviate grievances and heal wounds. The Broadcasting Culture Promotion Association will work with MBC to ensure that such unfortunate incidents do not occur again, based on the investigation results. We will also demand improvements in the working conditions of freelancers, including weathercasters."
Additionally, a report from January 27 indicated that a note found on Oh Yoanna's phone contained her complaints about workplace bullying. It was reported that she had informed four MBC officials about her situation before her death, but her concerns were allegedly ignored. The family is now calling for apologies from the perpetrators and a sincere public apology from MBC, which has indicated its intention to conduct a thorough investigation.
