MBC Responds to Allegations of Workplace Bullying Involving Late Weathercaster Oh Yoanna

MBC has issued a statement regarding allegations of workplace bullying against the late weathercaster Oh Yoanna, who passed away unexpectedly in September 2024. On January 28, 2025, the network clarified that they do not currently possess a recently discovered letter from the deceased. They expressed readiness to conduct a thorough investigation if the family requests fact verification based on this new evidence.
MBC emphasized the importance of handling matters related to the late weathercaster with care. They confirmed that during her time as a freelancer, Oh Yoanna did not officially report any grievances related to workplace bullying to the relevant departments or management.
The network stated, "If she had reported her experiences to management, we would have conducted an appropriate investigation. MBC has strict policies against workplace bullying and is committed to investigating any claims, including those from freelancers."
MBC also addressed reports claiming that Oh Yoanna had informed four MBC staff members about her experiences before her death, urging for the identification of these individuals. They cautioned against the reckless dissemination of unverified information, as it could harm the reputation of the deceased and potentially create further victims.
Additionally, MBC expressed concern over attempts to exploit this situation for sensationalism, stating their commitment to maintaining integrity as a public broadcaster and a workplace for its employees.
Oh Yoanna, who was previously an idol trainee, gained recognition after winning the title of 'Sook' at the 2019 Chunhyang Festival and was selected as an MBC weathercaster in 2021. She also appeared on tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' in 2022. Reports surfaced on January 27, 2025, indicating that a 17-page letter, approximately 2,750 characters long, was found on her phone, detailing instances of workplace bullying by two specific weathercasters. MBC acknowledged the situation as still being under investigation and expressed willingness to address any shortcomings if identified.
