MBC Launches Investigation into Workplace Bullying Linked to the Death of Oh Yoanna

MBC has initiated an investigation into the workplace bullying that has been cited as a contributing factor in the death of Oh Yoanna. The Truth Investigation Committee held its first meeting today (February 5) to begin uncovering the facts surrounding this tragic event.

On January 31, MBC announced the formation of the committee to clarify the circumstances surrounding Oh's death. The committee is chaired by attorney Chae Yang-hee from the law firm Hyemyeong, with attorney Jin Jin from the law firm Barun also appointed as an external member. Three internal members, including heads of the HR and compliance departments, will also participate.

The committee aims to conduct a thorough and prompt investigation starting from today’s meeting.

Reports surfaced on January 27 that a note found on Oh Yoanna's phone detailed her experiences of workplace bullying. It was revealed that she had informed four MBC officials about her situation prior to her death, but her concerns were reportedly ignored. The family of the deceased has called for apologies from the alleged perpetrators and a sincere public apology from MBC.

While MBC has committed to the investigation, criticism has arisen as the accused senior weathercasters have continued to appear on air, seemingly unaffected by the allegations. Recently, Kim Ga-young voluntarily stepped down from her role on 'Morning FM Tae's Show,' indicating some action is being taken.

Former MBC weathercasters, including Park Eun-ji and Bae Soo-yeon, have spoken out about the long-standing culture of bullying within the organization, sharing their own painful experiences. They expressed regret for not being able to help Oh, emphasizing the fear and loneliness that comes with such suffering.

In contrast, current show host Lee Moon-jung posted a message suggesting that both sides of the story should be heard before making judgments, but later deleted it. She clarified that her comments were personal opinions unrelated to Oh Yoanna, expressing her sorrow over the situation.

MBC has stated that they will actively consult with the family to include individuals they recommend in the investigation committee, ensuring that the investigation yields satisfactory results. They have pledged to maintain open communication with the family throughout the process to uncover the truth.
