MBC Cancels Year-End Entertainment Awards Following Airport Tragedy

MBC has announced the cancellation of its year-end entertainment awards, the '2024 MBC Broadcasting Entertainment Awards', due to a tragic plane crash at Muan International Airport. The ceremony, originally scheduled for December 29 at 8:30 PM, will not air as planned. MBC issued a statement saying, "Due to the urgent news coverage, the awards show will be canceled. We appreciate your understanding. Thank you."
The event had already seen the cancellation of its photo wall segment prior to the announcement of the broadcast cancellation. While the awards ceremony is still set to take place, the decision regarding whether it will be recorded and aired later remains undecided.
Additionally, MBC representatives stated that discussions are ongoing regarding the status of the upcoming '2024 MBC Acting Awards' and '2024 MBC Music Festival', scheduled for December 30 and 31, respectively. Given the current circumstances, it is likely that these events may also be replaced with news coverage.
The plane crash occurred at approximately 9:07 AM on December 29, when Jeju Air flight 7C2216 attempted to land at Muan International Airport, colliding with the runway's outer wall. According to the fire department, there were a total of 181 individuals on board, including 6 crew members, 173 South Korean passengers, and 2 Thai passengers. As of now, 120 fatalities have been confirmed, with only 2 survivors, one male and one female crew member.
