MBC Cancels 2024 Entertainment Awards Following Tragic Plane Crash

The 2024 MBC 방송연예대상 (MBC Entertainment Awards) has been officially canceled due to the tragic plane crash involving a Jeju Air flight at Muan International Airport. An MBC representative confirmed that the awards ceremony, originally scheduled for December 29 at 8:30 PM, will not take place. The event's red carpet and photo opportunities, initially set for 7 PM, were also scrapped earlier in the day.
In light of the incident, discussions are ongoing regarding how to announce the award winners, with MBC stating that they believe it is important to share the results with viewers at a later date. No final decisions have been made yet, but they aim to provide updates soon.
Coincidentally, MBC's cancellation comes just before a series of year-end award shows, including the 연기대상 (Acting Awards) on December 30 and the 가요대제전 (Music Festival) on December 31. The format for these upcoming ceremonies is expected to be influenced by the situation surrounding the entertainment awards. Other networks, such as KBS and SBS, are also monitoring the developments closely as they prepare for their own year-end events.
The plane crash occurred at 9:07 AM when Jeju Air flight 7C2216 attempted to land, colliding with the runway's outer wall. According to the fire department, there were 181 individuals on board, including 6 crew members, 173 South Korean passengers, and 2 Thai passengers. As of 5:26 PM, the death toll has risen to 174, with only 2 survivors reported.
