Man Charged with Stalking and Murder Requests Jury Trial

Yoon Jung-woo (윤정우), a 48-year-old man accused of stalking and murdering a woman, has applied for a jury trial. According to the Daegu District Court's Western Branch, Yoon submitted his request on July 10, leading to the postponement of the initial hearing scheduled for July 17 at 10 AM. Following his application, Yoon has reportedly been submitting letters of remorse. A legal source in Daegu noted that jury trials typically take place at the main courthouse, suggesting that the date change was due to court scheduling.
On July 3, the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office charged Yoon with violations of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, including retaliatory murder. Prosecutors revealed that between January and April of this year, Yoon threatened the victim, referred to as A, with a weapon after she received calls from another man. When A attempted to end their relationship and blocked his contact, Yoon went to her apartment and threatened her with a knife. A reported Yoon to the police in April, leading to a request for an arrest warrant on charges of special intimidation. However, the court denied the warrant, stating that Yoon was cooperating with the investigation and that there was insufficient reason to justify his detention.
While under investigation without detention, Yoon harbored resentment after A reported him. On June 10, he broke into her apartment through a gas pipe and killed her. He fled to a mountain in Sejong City, where his father's grave is located, but was apprehended by the police four days later on June 14. Meanwhile, the police have convened a committee to decide on the public disclosure of Yoon's personal information.
