Lucy’s Choi Sang-yeop Apologizes for Controversial Remarks About Women

Choi Sang-yeop of the idol band Lucy has issued an apology regarding comments that were perceived as derogatory towards women. On December 4, he addressed the issue through the fan communication platform Bubble, acknowledging that his choice of words disappointed many fans.
He stated, "I have come to realize that my words have caused disappointment to many. I sincerely apologize for the concern I caused to those who have supported me due to my careless word choice."
Choi emphasized that his intention was not to convey any negative meaning or implication with the term he used. However, he expressed deep regret for his oversight and committed to being more cautious in the future.
In his message, he said, "I am sending this message to sincerely apologize to those who may have been disappointed. I will act more carefully moving forward. I once again extend my heartfelt apologies to all who have supported me."
The controversy arose when Choi referred to a Polaroid camera as a '종이싸개' (paper cover), which some netizens interpreted as a derogatory term for women. He attempted to clarify by explaining, "When you take a Polaroid, paper comes out," but critics pointed out that the term has been used in some male communities to belittle women, stemming from a derogatory phrase related to menstruation.
Meanwhile, Choi Sang-yeop serves as the main vocalist for Lucy, who recently gained attention for their remake of Kim Hyung-jung's song '그녀가 웃잖아' (She Smiles) released on December 1.
