'Love is a One-Legged Bridge' Premieres with Ju Ji-hoon and Jung Yu-mi, Evoking Memories of 'What's Wrong with Secretary Kim'

'Love is a One-Legged Bridge' (사랑은 외나무다리에서) made its debut on November 23, 2024, captivating audiences with its charming romantic comedy elements reminiscent of 'What's Wrong with Secretary Kim' (김비서가 왜 그럴까). The new tvN drama features actors Ju Ji-hoon (주지훈) and Jung Yu-mi (정유미) in a story about love and rivalry.
The first episode introduces the reunion of Seok Ji-won (주지훈) and Yoon Ji-won (정유미), who were born on the same day with the same name into feuding families. After a painful breakup at eighteen, they meet again after 18 years, reigniting their tumultuous romance. The episode reveals their childhood as first loves, growing up in a hostile environment due to their families' longstanding feud, which led to their separation.
Written by Im Ye-jin (임예진), known for 'Love in the Moonlight' (구르미 그린 달빛) and 'Joseon Love Story: Nokdu Flower' (조선 로코-녹두전), and directed by Park Jun-hwa (박준화), acclaimed for 'What's Wrong with Secretary Kim' and the 'Alchemy of Souls' series, 'Love is a One-Legged Bridge' successfully captures the essence of traditional Korean romantic comedies. The show features a typical rich heir as the male lead and a strong-willed female lead, embodying the classic tropes of the genre while maintaining a lighthearted atmosphere.
Ju Ji-hoon's character, Seok Ji-won, makes a striking entrance, showcasing his charisma as he confronts the unethical practices of his family's construction business. He firmly tells Park Dong-jin (조재윤), the executive involved in illegal activities, that they will not engage in such disgraceful conduct, highlighting his strong moral compass. However, when it comes to Yoon Ji-won, he becomes emotionally charged, recalling their bitter history.
On the other hand, Jung Yu-mi's Yoon Ji-won remains resilient despite losing her family's educational foundation due to Seok Ji-won's family. Even in the pouring rain, she runs on the school grounds to clear her mind, determined to stand her ground and not resign from her position. Her defiance is evident as she declares, "Why should I resign? I will endure and show them!"
The chemistry between the two leads blossoms as their past animosity unfolds. A poignant moment occurs when Yoon Ji-won, struggling with broken glasses, fails to recognize Seok Ji-won, who gazes at her with a mix of shock and longing. Additionally, Yoon Ji-won dreams of Seok Ji-won, awakening with a wistful expression, further intensifying the romantic tension. The revelation of Seok Ji-won's past confession, where he playfully suggested they date, adds depth to their complicated relationship.
The classic trope of a wealthy male lead and a spirited female lead embarking on a romantic comedy journey is a familiar theme in Korean dramas. 'Love is a One-Legged Bridge' taps into this nostalgia, offering viewers a comforting and relatable experience. The ongoing chemistry between Ju Ji-hoon and Jung Yu-mi promises to keep audiences engaged as the story unfolds.
