Lim Young-woong Caught in DM Controversy: Accusations of Male Hatred and Fake News Emerge

K-pop singer Lim Young-woong has been embroiled in a direct message (DM) controversy for three days now, with claims suggesting that the source of the problematic DM may be a female-dominated online community, raising questions about whether he is a victim of male hatred.
On December 7, a netizen, referred to as A, shared a DM exchange purportedly with Lim Young-woong. A sent a message from what appeared to be Lim's account asking, "What are you doing in this situation?" to which the response was simply, "What?".
A criticized Lim, stating, "With the president's impeachment motion due to the unconstitutional martial law, the entire nation is gathering, and while I don't expect you to speak out, it's really insensitive. Aren't people of your age group the main consumers of your music?" Lim's account user replied, "Am I a politician? Why should I speak out?"
This exchange sparked a wave of criticism against Lim, with comparisons made to other celebrities who have voiced their opinions on President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment, leading to accusations of a lack of historical awareness.
Columnist Hwang Kyo-ik also weighed in, stating, "Not making political statements is a freedom. However, saying that only politicians can express political opinions can be seen as insulting to citizens who brave the cold to voice their political beliefs in public."
However, there is growing speculation that Lim may not have authored the controversial DM. Initially, A was identified as a producer from a popular entertainment program, but they later clarified, "I don't even follow that artist, nor have I sent any DMs."
The original post is said to have originated from a so-called 'female-centric' cafe known for radical feminism, political partisanship, and male hatred. This has led to suggestions that some individuals with anti-male sentiments may have exploited Lim's fame to create fake news. Many also argue that pressuring celebrities to disclose their political beliefs contradicts democratic principles.
As for Lim Young-woong's agency, Fish Music, they have not released any official statement regarding the controversy. However, multiple sources indicate that Lim is focused on preparing for his solo concert, 'Lim Young-woong Recital', scheduled for December 27-29 and January 2-4, 2025, at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul.
