Legendary Trot Singer Song Dae-kwan Passes Away

Song Dae-kwan, a revered figure in the Korean trot music scene, is set to be laid to rest today, February 9, at 11 AM at the Seoul National University Hospital funeral hall. Prior to the funeral, a memorial service organized by the Korean Singer Association will take place at 9:30 AM. The service will feature a eulogy delivered by his close friend and fellow entertainer Tae Jin-ah, along with tributes from junior singer Lee Ja-yeon, the current president of the association, and singer Kang Jin.

Born in Jeongeup, North Jeolla Province, in 1946, Song Dae-kwan made his debut in 1967 with the song 'Injeong Manheun Agassi.' Despite facing a long period of obscurity, he gained recognition eight years later with his hit song 'Haetdeulnal' in 1975. The song's uplifting lyrics, "The bright day will return," served as a source of encouragement for both himself and his audience, ultimately leading him to win the title of Singer of the Year in 1976.

Throughout his career, Song Dae-kwan released numerous hits, including 'Ne Bakja,' 'Yuhyeongga,' and 'Chapyohan Jang,' becoming a beloved figure in the music industry. His approachable style and warm voice resonated with the public, solidifying his status as one of the 'Four Kings of Trot' alongside fellow artists Tae Jin-ah, Seol Woon-do, and the late Hyun Chul.

Song Dae-kwan and Tae Jin-ah shared a deep bond, often appearing together on various entertainment programs, where their playful rivalry brought joy to viewers. Their friendship was further solidified during their challenging times in the United States, and Tae Jin-ah even supported Song Dae-kwan financially during a health crisis.

The two frequently performed together, including joint concerts, and Tae Jin-ah will be present to bid farewell to his friend today. Following discussions between the Korean Singer Association and Song Dae-kwan's family, Tae Jin-ah and Lee Ja-yeon will serve as co-chairs for the funeral committee. Tae Jin-ah was among the first to visit the funeral hall, expressing his heartfelt sorrow.

Song Dae-kwan passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on February 7 at the age of 78. His agency, Star Lineup Entertainment, clarified that he did not have any chronic illnesses but had recently experienced a decline in health. The funeral will be held at the Seoul National University Hospital, with the burial site at Seoul Memorial Park.
