In 2009, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison. His wife, Liu Xia (劉霞), was placed under house arrest for nearly eight years after visiting him following the announcement of his Nobel Prize.

Liu Xiaobo, a Nobel laureate who never had the chance to wear his medal, died from multiple organ failure while receiving treatment at the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University in Shenyang. He had been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer during a routine prison check in late May and had been under state supervision for treatment since early June. His request to seek treatment abroad was denied by the authorities. Liu Xia was released from house arrest just three days before the first anniversary of her husband's death, departing for Germany on July 10, 2018.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on charges of murdering three family members, including his parents in their 60s and 70s and his older brother in Gimpo, South Korea. The Gimpo Police announced on July 13 that they had detained the suspect, referred to as A, on charges of familial homicide and murder. Judge Oh Seung-hee of the Incheon District Court's Bucheon branch issued the arrest warrant after a pre-arrest interrogation, citing concerns about the suspect potentially fleeing.

Upon arrival, police found all three victims deceased: the father and brother were located in a room, while the mother was found in the kitchen, all showing signs of rigor mortis. Evidence, including bloodstains and a weapon believed to be used in the crime, was also discovered at the scene. 

The National Forensic Service later conducted autopsies and preliminarily concluded that the victims died from stab wounds inflicted by the weapon. During police questioning, A reportedly stated that he was provoked by his brother's nagging, leading to an impulsive act of violence.

30대 남성이 부모님(60대, 70대)과 형을 포함한 세 가족을 살해한 혐의로 한국 김포에서 체포되었다. 김포 경찰은 7월 13일, A라는 용의자를 가족 살해 및 살인 혐의로 구속했다고 발표했다. 인천지방법원 부천지청의 오승희 판사는 용의자가 도주할 우려가 있다는 이유로 구속영장을 발부했다.

이 사건은 7월 10일 아침 김포 하성 지역의 단독주택에서 발생했다. 사건은 다음 날 A의 어머니의 동료가 그녀가 출근하지 않자 집 밖에서 혈흔을 발견하고 신고하면서 알려졌다.

경찰이 도착했을 때, 세 명의 피해자가 모두 사망한 상태로 발견되었다: 아버지와 형은 한 방에서 발견되었고, 어머니는 주방에서 발견되었으며, 모두 경직의 징후를 보였다. 범죄에 사용된 것으로 추정되는 무기와 혈흔을 포함한 증거도 현장에서 발견되었다.

국립과학수사연구원은 이후 부검을 실시하고 피해자들이 무기에 의해 찔린 상처로 사망한 것으로 예비 결론을 내렸다. 경찰 조사 중 A는 형의 잔소리에 자극을 받아 충동적인 폭력 행위를 저질렀다고 진술한 것으로 전해졌다.
