Lee Soon-jae's Absence at the Korean PD Awards Explained
Actor Lee Soon-jae did not attend the 37th Korean PD Awards, raising concerns among fans. The reason for his absence was revealed following his previous health issues. Last October, Lee had to step back from the play Waiting for Godot due to health concerns, requiring a three-month break as advised by his doctor. Despite worries about his attendance at the 2024 KBS Acting Awards, he made a notable appearance, winning the grand prize for his role in the drama 개소리 (Barking).
After a three-month hiatus, Lee returned to the stage, supported by fellow actors Kim Yong-gun and Choi Soo-jong as he accepted his trophy. He expressed his gratitude, saying, "Having lived a long life, there are days like this. I prepared for this opportunity, and today I received this beautiful and precious award," marking his first acting award in his illustrious career.
At 90 years old, Lee is the oldest active actor in the industry, yet he had not previously won an acting award despite his extensive career. He emotionally thanked the audience, saying, "To the viewers who came to encourage me late into the night and those watching at home, I have received so much help throughout my life. Thank you." His heartfelt words resonated with everyone present.
However, on April 15, during the broadcast of the Korean PD Awards on KBS1, Lee was notably absent. Although he was awarded the Best Actor trophy, his agency representative, Lee Seung-hee, accepted the award on his behalf. She explained, "The teacher is feeling a bit unwell and could not attend. He sends his gratitude to the Korean PD Awards organizers and judges. He is a bit sick and needs a lot of encouragement and support. A cheer for him would be appreciated."
OSEN later confirmed that Lee's absence was due to mobility issues. A close associate stated, "His health has improved significantly, but he still has some difficulty moving. Due to his age, he has lost strength in his legs, making it hard for him to walk without assistance. He prefers not to rely on others, which is why we proceeded with a proxy acceptance."
Fans expressed their relief and support online, saying, "I was really worried, but I'm glad to hear his health is improving," and "I hope he doesn't suffer anymore. I want to see the great actor Lee Soon-jae perform for many more years. Stay healthy!"
Born in 1935, Lee Soon-jae debuted in theater in 1956 and began his television career with KBS's inaugural drama 나도 인간이 되련다 (I Want to Be a Human). After nearly 70 years, he received the KBS Acting Award trophy in 2024, becoming the oldest recipient in the history of the awards.
