Lee Seung Hwan Joins Protests with Altered Lyrics at Impeachment Rally
On December 13, 2024, singer Lee Seung Hwan took to the stage at the impeachment candlelight vigil held in front of the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul. He performed a medley of his songs, including 'As Much as Love is Spread in the World,' 'Do You Love?' and 'Dunk Shot,' creatively altering the lyrics to express his political stance: 'If we can impeach Yoon Seok-yeol, how wonderful would that be? Let's chant as if we are flying in the sky: Come down, Yoon Seok-yeol.'
After his performance, Lee reflected on his experience, stating, 'I am a veteran performer at impeachment rallies. I stood at the 2016 Park Geun-hye resignation rally and the 2019 Prosecutorial Reform rally. I thought I would never perform at such events again, but here I am, struggling with my old body to join this rally, which I deeply regret.'
Despite the cold weather, Lee removed his outerwear and sang 'I Ask,' with lyrics emphasizing the need to avoid shame and unhappiness, and to confront the absurdities of reality and an uncertain future. He then shifted the mood with 'Superhero' and concluded with the ballad 'How Can Love Be Like This?' urging the audience to express their frustrations through song.
Prior to the event, Lee had announced his participation, stating he would perform altered versions of 'Dunk Shot' (renamed to call for Yoon Seok-yeol's impeachment), 'As Much as Love is Spread in the World,' 'God of Money' (also altered), 'Do You Love?!', 'I Ask,' and 'Superhero.'
Lee Seung Hwan has been a consistent critic of the government since the declaration of martial law on December 3, and he has actively shared updates regarding his concert plans on the day martial law was lifted. He also contributed 12.13 million won to the organizers of the candlelight vigil, demonstrating his commitment to political expression.
