The person who motivated her during her lowest moments was her father, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. On June 5, 2025, Lee Hwa-young, the former Vice Governor of Peace in Gyeonggi Province, received a confirmed sentence of 7 years and 8 months in prison from the Supreme Court for his involvement in the 'illegal remittance to North Korea' case. The court upheld findings from previous trials that confirmed the involvement of Lee and the company, Ssangbangwool, in covering the costs of President Lee Jae-myung's visit to North Korea. Legal experts suggest that this ruling may impact the ongoing trial of President Lee, who has also been indicted as a co-conspirator in the North Korean remittance case. However, the Democratic Party is currently pushing for a 'trial suspension law' that would halt criminal proceedings against a sitting president, leaving the future of the trial uncertain.

The Supreme Court's second division, led by Justice Park Young-jae, confirmed the lower court's ruling, which included a fine of 250 million won and a forfeiture of approximately 325.95 million won. Lee was accused of having former Ssangbangwool Chairman Kim Seong-tae pay a total of 8 million dollars, which included 5 million dollars for a 'North Korean smart farm improvement' project and 3 million dollars for President Lee's travel expenses to North Korea during his tenure as Gyeonggi Province Governor in 2019.

Both the first and second trials, as well as the Supreme Court, acknowledged that 800,000 dollars were remitted to North Korea, with 394,000 dollars being classified as violations of foreign exchange laws due to unauthorized transfers, including 164,000 dollars for the smart farm project and 230,000 dollars for travel expenses. The remaining 406,000 dollars was ruled as not proven to be a crime. Notably, the court found that 200,000 dollars of the travel expenses were delivered to the Workers' Party of Korea.

Additionally, the court recognized Lee's guilt in receiving bribes and illegal political funds amounting to approximately 320 million won from Ssangbangwool. Claims made by Lee that the prosecution manipulated the case were dismissed by the court.

President Lee Jae-myung has been undergoing a first trial at Suwon District Court since June of last year, facing charges of 'third-party bribery' related to this case. He is accused of facilitating North Korean business dealings at the request of Ssangbangwool, which allegedly led to the covering of travel expenses through Lee Hwa-young. A current judge noted that since the Supreme Court has confirmed the illegal remittance to North Korea, the determination of whether there was collusion between President Lee and Lee Hwa-young will be crucial in deciding guilt or innocence.

Previously, Lee Hwa-young had testified in June 2023 that he reported the payment of travel expenses to Governor Lee Jae-myung, but later recanted this statement in court, claiming it was coerced by the prosecution. However, the first trial's ruling indicated that Lee had strong motives to promote the governor's visit and that he had repeatedly stated he informed the governor about the arrangements, which supports suspicions of President Lee's involvement in the remittance. The court did not make a separate judgment on whether Lee Hwa-young reported directly to President Lee.

The case against President Lee has yet to see a formal trial despite being over a year since the indictment. The proceedings have been stalled for over three months due to a request from President Lee's side to disqualify the judge, and further delays occurred with a change in the judicial panel at the beginning of this year.

A preparatory hearing is scheduled for July 22, but it remains uncertain whether the trial will proceed. The trial suspension law proposed by the Democratic Party has passed the National Assembly's Legislative and Judiciary Committee and is awaiting a vote in the plenary session. If the amendment passes, it is likely that the trial regarding the North Korean remittance case will not occur during President Lee's term.

1심과 2심, 그리고 대법원 모두 80만 달러가 북한으로 송금되었으며, 이 중 39만 4천 달러는 무단 송금으로 외환법 위반으로 분류되었고, 여기에는 스마트 농장 프로젝트를 위한 16만 4천 달러와 여행 경비로 23만 달러가 포함된다. 나머지 40만 6천 달러는 범죄로 입증되지 않은 것으로 판결되었다. 특히 법원은 여행 경비 중 20만 달러가 조선로동당에 전달된 사실을 확인했다.

또한 법원은 이화영이 쌍방울로부터 약 3억 2천만 원의 뇌물과 불법 정치 자금을 수수한 혐의에 대해 유죄를 인정했다. 이화영이 검찰이 사건을 조작했다고 주장한 내용은 법원에 의해 기각되었다.

이재명 대통령은 지난해 6월부터 수원지방법원에서 이 사건과 관련된 '제3자 뇌물' 혐의로 1심을 받고 있다. 그는 쌍방울의 요청으로 북한 사업 거래를 촉진한 혐의를 받고 있으며, 이는 이화영을 통해 여행 경비를 부담하게 했다는 주장이다. 현재 판사는 대법원이 북한으로의 불법 송금을 확인했기 때문에 이 대통령과 이화영 간의 공모 여부가 유죄 또는 무죄를 결정하는 데 중요할 것이라고 언급했다.

이화영은 2023년 6월에 이재명 지사에게 여행 경비 지급을 보고했다고 증언했으나, 이후 법정에서 이 진술이 검찰에 의해 강요되었다고 번복했다. 그러나 1심 판결은 이가 지사의 방문을 촉진할 강한 동기가 있었고, 그가 지사에게 준비 사항을 알렸다고 반복적으로 진술한 점이 이 대통령의 송금 연루 의혹을 뒷받침한다고 밝혔다. 법원은 이화영이 이 대통령에게 직접 보고했는지에 대한 별도의 판단을 내리지 않았다.

이 대통령에 대한 사건은 기소된 지 1년이 넘었지만 아직 정식 재판이 열리지 않았다. 재판 절차는 이 대통령 측의 판사 기피 요청으로 3개월 이상 지연되었고, 올해 초 사법 패널의 변경으로 추가 지연이 발생했다.

준비 심리는 7월 22일로 예정되어 있으나 재판이 진행될지는 불확실하다. 민주당이 제안한 재판 중단 법안은 국회 법제사법위원회를 통과했으며 본회의 투표를 기다리고 있다. 만약 개정안이 통과된다면 북한 송금 사건에 대한 재판은 이 대통령의 임기 중에 열리지 않을 가능성이 높다.

On June 4, a second hearing took place at the Seoul Central District Court regarding the validity of the exclusive contract between NewJeans and Ador. The court session was presided over by Chief Judge Jeong Hoe-il. Notably, NewJeans did not attend the hearing, with only their legal representatives and those from Ador present to discuss the contract issues.

The NewJeans team stated, "The trust between us and Ador has completely broken down. We have crossed a river that cannot be crossed back. We have no intention of reaching an agreement." In contrast, Ador expressed a willingness to settle, saying, "If the court provides a conclusion, we can discuss an agreement afterward."

Last November, NewJeans announced the termination of their contract with Ador due to alleged breaches. They subsequently rebranded themselves as 'NJZ' and began independent activities. However, Ador filed for a confirmation of the contract's validity, along with requests to maintain their status as the agency and to prohibit any advertising contracts.

The court granted all of Ador's requests. Following this, NewJeans filed an immediate objection and halted their activities.

On May 30, the court also approved Ador's request for indirect enforcement against NewJeans, ruling that they must not engage in independent or third-party entertainment activities without prior approval from Ador until the first-instance judgment on the contract's validity is delivered. If NewJeans violates this ruling, they will be liable to pay Ador 1 billion KRW for each violation, and if they perform as a complete group independently, they will owe 5 billion KRW at once.

The next court date is scheduled for July 24.

법원은 아도르의 모든 요청을 승인하였다. 이후 뉴진스는 즉각적인 이의를 제기하고 그들의 활동을 중단하였다.

5월 30일, 법원은 또한 아도르의 뉴진스에 대한 간접 집행 요청을 승인하며, 계약 유효성에 대한 1심 판결이 내려질 때까지 아도르의 사전 승인 없이 독립적이거나 제3자 연예 활동에 참여하지 말 것을 명령하였다. 만약 뉴진스가 이 명령을 위반할 경우, 각 위반에 대해 아도르에게 10억 원을 지급해야 하며, 만약 완전체로 독립적으로 활동할 경우, 한 번에 50억 원을 지급해야 한다.
