Lee Dong-wook's Stellar Performance in 'Harbin' Sparks Viewer Curiosity

On January 29, actor Lee Dong-wook made a guest appearance on the web entertainment show 'Pinggaego' during the Lunar New Year episode, which was released on YouTube. His return to the show, which received positive feedback last year, was marked by a memorable moment when host Yoo Jae-suk referred to him as 'Lee Chang-seob,' the character he portrayed in the film 'Harbin.'
'Harbin' is set in 1909 and depicts the intense pursuit and suspicion between those heading to Harbin for a common goal and those chasing them. The film highlights the actions of General Ahn Jung-geun, featuring various independence fighters, including Lee Dong-wook's character, Lee Chang-seob, who is part of the Korean independence army alongside Ahn Jung-geun (played by Hyun Bin).
While Ahn Jung-geun is a historical figure, Lee Chang-seob is a fictional character created for the film. However, Lee Dong-wook's performance was so realistic that it felt as if such independence fighters truly existed. He portrayed a character who, despite the uncertainty surrounding their country's independence, maintained a strong sense of purpose and conviction, even when faced with the enemy, the Japanese Imperial Army.
Lee Chang-seob is depicted as someone who constantly keeps an eye on Ahn Jung-geun within the independence army. The film's narrative begins during a lonely period for Ahn Jung-geun, emphasizing his ideals as a peace advocate after losing his comrades. Lee Dong-wook's character represents the more pragmatic independence fighters who stand in contrast to Ahn Jung-geun's idealism.
Despite their differing beliefs, the two characters share a common goal of independence. Even in life-threatening situations, Lee Chang-seob never disparages Ahn Jung-geun, instead respecting his noble ideals. 'Harbin' is not just about Ahn Jung-geun; it tells the broader story of various independence fighters who, despite their different values, unite for the cause of independence.
Lee Dong-wook's exceptional performance in this special appearance has led him to promote 'Harbin' passionately for the past two years, expressing his disappointment that more viewers haven't come to see the film. 'Harbin' has been screening in theaters since December 24, continuing to attract audiences during the Lunar New Year holiday.
