K-Pop Star Wheesung Passes Away at 43, Music Industry Mourns

The music world is in mourning following the passing of singer Wheesung (real name Choi Wheesung), who tragically passed away at the age of 43 on March 10. Colleagues and fans gathered to pay their respects at his funeral, but the lack of acknowledgment from major music broadcasts has raised eyebrows.
On March 16, SBS's Inkigayo aired, featuring performances from artists like SEVENTEEN's Hoshi and Woozi, ITZY's Yeji, Red Velvet's Seulgi, and others, with G-Dragon's 'TOO BAD' taking the top spot for the week. However, the show did not include a single tribute to Wheesung, even after the announcement of the winner.
Wheesung was found deceased at his home, and the cause of death remains undetermined according to preliminary autopsy results from the National Forensic Service. His sudden passing has left both his family and the K-pop community in deep sorrow. Since debuting in 2002 with his first album 'Like A Movie,' Wheesung produced numerous hits, including 'I Can't' and 'With Me,' which topped charts for six consecutive weeks.
He played a significant role in popularizing the R&B genre in South Korea, and his unique vocal style has inspired many artists and impersonators. Following the news of his death, tributes poured in from fellow artists, including Solar from MAMAMOO, Ailee, and others, expressing their shock and grief.
During a press conference for KBS2's music show 'The Seasons - Park Bo-gum's Cantabile,' the host acknowledged Wheesung's passing, stating, "We sincerely mourn his loss and remember his wonderful music."
On the evening of the same day, the cast of SBS M's 'The Show' gathered to honor Wheesung, and a tribute was also held on MBC M's 'Show Champion.' Mnet's 'M Countdown' expressed condolences, stating, "We extend our deepest sympathies to the one who comforted music fans with his warm voice."
Wheesung's funeral was held at Samsung Medical Center, attended by many notable figures in the industry, including Lee Hyori, IU, and BTS (방탄소년단), who sent floral tributes. However, during this time of mourning, KBS2's 'Music Bank' and MBC's 'Show! Music Core' failed to include any tribute messages for Wheesung.
Despite past controversies surrounding Wheesung, including allegations of drug use, the lack of acknowledgment from music shows has disappointed many fans and colleagues who expected a more respectful tribute. Notably, Wheesung's first public broadcast win was on 'Music Camp,' the predecessor to 'Music Core,' and he had significant achievements on 'Inkigayo' as well.
After the funeral, Wheesung was laid to rest at Gwangneung Memorial Park. His brother, Dr. Choi Hyuk-sung, expressed his hope that fans would continue to listen to Wheesung's music, stating, "His songs will always remain with us, and I hope he is remembered by future generations."
