Korean Relay Team Wins Historic Gold Medal at World University Games

On July 29, 2025, the South Korean athletics team made history by winning its first-ever gold medal in the relay event at a global competition. The team, consisting of Namadi Joel Jin (나마디 조엘 진), Seo Min-jun (서민준), Lee Jae-sung (이재성), and Kim Jung-yoon (김정윤), achieved a remarkable time of 38.50 seconds in the men's 400m relay at the 2025 Rhine-Ruhr Summer World University Games held in Germany on July 27.

Namadi Joel Jin shared a heartfelt message on his Instagram, expressing gratitude for the support he received and his commitment to learning from this experience, stating, "As this was my first Universiade competition, I will learn a lot from this experience and strive to perform without regrets. Thank you to everyone who cheered for us."

Fans may recognize Namadi Joel Jin from his childhood role in the popular 2016 KBS 2TV drama, Descendants of the Sun (태양의 후예), where he portrayed a young boy who humorously asked a doctor, played by Onew (온유), for a goat instead of shoes.

Born to a South Korean mother and a Nigerian father who was a long jumper, Namadi has been nurturing his dream of becoming an athlete since elementary school.

President Lee Jae-myung (이재명) congratulated the team via his official social media, highlighting the significance of this victory as it marks the first time South Korea has won a relay event at a global competition. He expressed hope that the team's achievement would bring joy and pride to the nation.
