Korean Relay Team Makes History with Gold Medal Win, Featuring Former Child Actor

In a historic achievement, the South Korean relay team has won its first-ever gold medal in the men's 400m relay at a global athletics competition. The team, consisting of Seo Min-jun (서민준), Namadi Joel Jin (나마디 조엘진), Lee Jae-sung (이재성), and Kim Jung-yoon (김정윤), clinched the gold with a time of 38.50 seconds during the finals held at the Rhine-Ruhr Summer Universiade in Germany on July 27. This victory marks a significant milestone for South Korea in the realm of international athletics.

The team had initially qualified for the finals in seventh place with a time of 39.14 seconds but managed to pull off a thrilling upset, finishing just 0.3 seconds ahead of South Africa.

Among the team members, Namadi Joel Jin, born in 2006, has a unique background as he previously appeared as a child actor in the popular KBS2 drama Descendants of the Sun (태양의 후예) in 2016. In the series, he played a memorable role where he humorously requested a goat instead of shoes from the character Dr. Chi-hoon (played by Onew), earning him the nickname 'Goat Boy.'

Joel Jin is the son of a Nigerian long jump athlete and a Korean mother, and he began his journey in athletics in the fifth grade. Last year, he set a new record in the 100m for high school boys in South Korea.

At the recently concluded Rhine-Ruhr Summer Universiade, South Korea finished fourth overall, securing a total of 57 medals, including 21 gold, 9 silver, and 27 bronze, trailing behind Japan, China, and the United States.
