Korean Ministerial Candidate Expresses Regret Over Controversy and Shares Personal Struggles

On July 14, 강선우 (Kang Sun-woo), the nominee for the Minister of Gender Equality and Family, attended a confirmation hearing at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul. During the session, she addressed allegations of mistreatment towards her staff, stating, "I sincerely apologize to my staff who may have been hurt by the controversy surrounding me."
Kang acknowledged the media reports suggesting that she had her aides separate trash and repair a toilet at her home, expressing regret for the situation. "I take full responsibility for the misunderstandings that have arisen due to my shortcomings," she said, vowing to be more mindful in her future conduct.
However, she refuted claims regarding the allegations, clarifying that the items in question were not trash but rather delivery boxes for office supplies. Responding to inquiries about food waste, she admitted to having leftover food from the previous night in her car, which she had intended to eat on the way to work.
Despite her willingness to address some issues, Kang declined to provide documentation related to the allegations of abuse of power, stating she would consider the request for further review.
During the hearing, Kang became emotional while discussing her child with developmental disabilities. She explained that the family's residence in 종로구 (Jongno-gu) instead of their registered address in 강서구 (Gangseo-gu) was due to the unique needs of her child. "Our family situation is not typical; my child experiences the world at a different pace," she shared, highlighting the challenges of transitioning to a new neighborhood.
Kang expressed that maintaining their home in Jongno was crucial for her child to continue seeing friends and adapt gradually to the new environment in Gangseo. She was visibly moved as she spoke about her family, struggling to hold back tears.
In response to a question from 더불어민주당 (Democratic Party) member 서영교 (Seo Young-kyo) about whether the challenges of raising a child with disabilities bring happiness, Kang affirmed, "Yes, my child is my beginning, my everything, and my end."
