Korean Man Charged for Abusing Sri Lankan Worker with Forklift

In February, a South Korean man was charged by police for allegedly abusing a Sri Lankan migrant worker at a brick factory in Naju, South Jeolla Province. The suspect, identified as a man in his 50s, was arrested on July 25 for special confinement and assault. On February 26, he reportedly bound the 31-year-old worker, referred to as B, with industrial plastic wrap and lifted him with a forklift, dragging him around the site. The incident was captured on video and sparked public outrage, prompting an investigation after it was aired in the media. President Lee Jae-myung condemned the act as a 'barbaric violation of human rights.' Following the report from B, police quickly moved to charge the suspect. Authorities are also looking into the involvement of around 20 other workers who either participated in or witnessed the incident. The police plan to summon the suspect for questioning and investigate any additional workplace misconduct, including bullying and verbal abuse. The Gwangju Regional Employment and Labor Office has also begun a review to check for violations of labor laws.
