Korean Basketball Star Heo Woong Faces Legal Battle Over Ex-Girlfriend Controversy

Heo Woong, a prominent star in professional basketball, is currently embroiled in a personal scandal involving his ex-girlfriend, referred to as A. The situation has escalated into legal disputes, particularly after Heo filed a lawsuit against A's former legal representative, No Jong-eon, for alleged instigation of false accusations and defamation. This case has recently concluded with the police determining there was 'insufficient evidence' to proceed.
On June 5, No Jong-eon released a statement indicating that Heo Woong had accused him of false accusations and defamation last October, but the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul decided not to pursue the case, citing consistent testimonies and a lack of evidence.
Previously, Heo Woong had been accused of sexual assault by A, but he was cleared of all charges due to insufficient evidence. Following this, No Jong-eon filed a counter-suit, claiming that he was coerced into making the accusations against Heo.
No Jong-eon expressed confusion over the situation, stating, "It seems like a scapegoat is needed, and that scapegoat is me." He also revealed text messages allegedly sent by A, which suggested a plan to falsely accuse him.
In response, Heo Woong's legal team, led by attorney Bu Ji-seok, has also filed charges against No Jong-eon, claiming that he knowingly misled A into making false statements against Heo, suggesting that if they maintained consistency in their testimonies, a rape charge could be substantiated.
Despite the police's decision not to pursue the case, No Jong-eon has vowed to take strong legal action against Heo Woong, labeling the accusations as a clear act of retaliation. He also plans to address the malicious falsehoods circulating online.
The controversy began last year when Heo Woong accused A and her acquaintance, B, of attempted extortion, threats, and stalking, claiming A threatened to leak private conversations and demanded a substantial sum of money. A countered these claims, alleging that Heo was stalking her and hinting at self-harm.
According to Heo's side, he and A began dating in late 2018 and experienced two pregnancies during their three-year relationship. Heo had promised to take responsibility for the first pregnancy, but A opted for an abortion. During the second pregnancy, A insisted on marriage before childbirth, while Heo expressed the need for more time to consider.
Following these events, Heo claims A's behavior changed drastically, leading to verbal abuse and threats. Despite A eventually undergoing an abortion, the couple's relationship deteriorated due to ongoing threats and familial opposition, resulting in their breakup at the end of 2021.
After their separation, A allegedly stalked Heo and confessed to drug use, claiming that various health issues were a result of Heo's actions. This prompted Heo to file a lawsuit against her for continued harassment.
Conversely, A maintains that she was the one being stalked by Heo, stating that after being abruptly broken up with post-abortion, she began dating another man, which led Heo to attempt contact and even invade her home.
A has denied any allegations of drug use or self-harm, asserting that the claims made by Heo's side are entirely false. Meanwhile, Heo's attorney, Bu Ji-seok, is currently representing the family of the late Kim Sae-ron.
