Kim Ki-hee Sparks Controversy with Instagram Post After Leaving Ulsan Hyundai

Kim Ki-hee, who recently joined the Seattle Sounders in Major League Soccer (MLS), has stirred controversy with a post on Instagram featuring former teammates from Ulsan Hyundai, all of whom have since transferred to other clubs. On June 6, he shared a photo with the caption "탈출은 지능순" ("Escape is intelligence") which raised eyebrows among fans.

One fan reached out to Kim, asking for clarification on his comment, expressing concern about misinterpreting his feelings towards teammates he had shared both joyful and difficult moments with. Kim responded playfully, saying, "Escape is intelligence, haha! You’re the last one, haha!"

The fan, seemingly confused, asked if they had misunderstood the message. Kim then clarified that he was joking with friends and hoped there was no misunderstanding. However, the fan later expressed disappointment, stating that this revelation had caused them significant hurt and shock, sharing their feelings on an online community.

In response to the growing backlash, Ulsan's key defender and captain, Kim Young-gwon, posted on his Instagram on June 7, emphasizing the importance of maintaining basic respect for former teams and teammates, which many fans interpreted as a direct critique of Kim Ki-hee.

As the controversy escalated, Kim Ki-hee issued an apology, stating, "I sincerely apologize to Ulsan fans for causing trouble due to my inappropriate comments. There is no excuse for my actions." He mentioned that his family had expressed disappointment, indicating that if he continued with such a mindset, they would not want to see him again. He vowed to reflect on his actions and grow into a better person who can heal the wounds he has caused. However, this apology has since been removed from his Instagram account.

Kim Ki-hee previously played for the Seattle Sounders in 2018 and 2019 before joining Ulsan Hyundai for the 2020 season, where he helped the team secure the AFC Champions League title in his first season and contributed to three consecutive K League 1 championships starting in 2022.
