Kim Jung-hyun's Apology Sparks Controversy Ahead of KBS Acting Awards

Actor Kim Jung-hyun's public apology during the '2024 KBS Acting Awards' on December 31 has recently come to light, igniting a wave of criticism. On January 2, it was reported that the awards ceremony, which was postponed due to a national mourning period, may be rescheduled. According to OSEN's investigation, discussions are underway regarding the reorganization of the event, particularly focusing on the reunion of Kim Jung-hyun and Seohyun, who served as the ceremony's MC. This marks their first meeting in six years.

The controversy dates back to July 2018, during the press conference for the MBC drama 'Time,' where Kim Jung-hyun faced backlash for refusing to link arms with Seohyun and displaying a lack of professionalism. He later withdrew from the drama citing health issues. However, the situation resurfaced three years later when messages exchanged between Kim and his then-girlfriend Seo Ye-ji were made public, reigniting the debate.

On April 14, 2021, Kim Jung-hyun issued a handwritten apology, stating, "The entire process of leaving the drama 'Time' and my behavior at the press conference were wrong. I sincerely apologize to Seohyun and everyone involved who suffered because of my actions."

Now, nearly six years later, the two actors found themselves on stage together again. During the '2024 KBS Acting Awards,' Kim reportedly expressed, "I have reflected on many past mistakes. It has weighed heavily on my heart, and I wanted to apologize."

This has led to accusations that Kim's apology was once again unilateral and lacked consideration for Seohyun, with some labeling it as 'rude.' In response, Kim's agency, Story J Company, confirmed that while he did not specify whom he was addressing, he did apologize during the awards.

The situation has created an atmosphere of discomfort for Seohyun, who is now facing renewed scrutiny due to Kim's comments. Some have even suggested that his apology should be edited out of the broadcast. As discussions continue about the potential rescheduling of the awards on January 7 or 11, KBS has stated that no decisions have been finalized yet.
