Kim Hee-won Makes Directorial Debut with 'Lighting Store': 'I Learned Humility'

Kim Hee-won, known for his acting, has made his directorial debut with the Disney+ original series '조명가게' (Lighting Store). On November 20, during a press conference and footage screening held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore, Kim shared his thoughts on stepping behind the camera for the first time.
The series, based on the webtoon by Kang Full, tells the story of a mysterious shop at the end of a dark alley that attracts customers with hidden secrets. The event featured Kim Hee-won alongside writer Kang Full and actors Ju Ji-hoon and Park Bo-young, who discussed the project with global media.
Reflecting on his directorial experience, Kim recalled the nerves he felt on the first day of shooting, pondering how to balance audience engagement with the unique elements of the drama. He emphasized the importance of relatability in storytelling, stating, "'Lighting Store' is a unique drama that needs to resonate with people, so I aimed to incorporate a certain level of distinctiveness that would be easily accepted."
Kim praised his co-stars, noting their exceptional acting skills despite being his juniors. He mentioned Park Bo-young's initial concerns about portraying a nurse and how he focused on directing her to present a fresh perspective. He also expressed curiosity about how to reveal different facets of Ju Ji-hoon’s character, highlighting the smooth communication that made the process enjoyable.
Ju Ji-hoon commented on Kim's unique perspective as a director, noting that he approached the set with a third-person viewpoint, which contributed to a well-prepared environment. He felt a strong chemistry with his fellow actors, allowing for a relaxed and free acting experience.
Kang Full also praised Kim, stating that he understood the complex world of 'Lighting Store' exceptionally well and appreciated his deep understanding of the characters.
In a light-hearted moment, Kim Hee-won remarked that he learned humility through directing, admitting, "As an actor, I performed for my own satisfaction. I apologize for that. However, interpreting the writer's vision revealed the incredible details involved. The actors were outstanding, and the dedication of the staff was admirable. I realized I must remain humble; directing is a collaborative effort, not just my own. When Kang Full first suggested I try directing, I wondered what he saw in me. I was simply an actor, but I had a dream of directing, and this opportunity has been surreal. I still feel nervous and honored to be here with the writer and actors. I am looking forward to December 4th and feel a mix of excitement and disbelief."
'Lighting Store' is set to premiere on Disney+ on December 4.
