Karina of Aespa Addresses Political Controversy

Karina, a member of the K-pop group Aespa, has spoken out regarding the political controversy that arose after she posted a photo wearing a jumper with a red '2' during the recent presidential election. In a video released on July 6 on the YouTube channel '요정재형' (Fairy Jae-hyung), titled 'Finally Here, the Youngest Guest Karina,' she clarified her intentions behind the post.

Karina expressed her desire for a peaceful life, stating, 'I hope not just for myself but for everyone around me to live without any issues, especially given the recent controversies.' She emphasized that she had no political intentions when she shared the photo, which she later deleted after receiving feedback from fans.

Reflecting on the incident, she said, 'I was just trying to communicate with fans on a chilly day by wearing a coat and posting a picture. I realize now that it was naive of me.' Karina acknowledged that even while abroad, she should have been more aware of the implications of her actions and vowed to educate herself further.

She also admitted that while she understands she must take responsibility for the situation, it was difficult to see her fellow members affected by the fallout.

The controversy began on May 28 when Karina posted the photo, leading to speculation online that it was a political statement supporting a specific party ahead of the 21st presidential election. After two hours, she removed the post. In response to the backlash, her agency, SM Entertainment, issued an apology, clarifying that Karina's post was meant to be casual and not politically motivated, and they regretted any misunderstandings caused.
