Kahi from After School Opens Up About Her Troubling Family History

Kahi, a former member of the girl group After School, recently shared her painful family history in a new video on the YouTube channel 새롭게하소서CBS. In the video, she candidly discussed her lonely childhood and the violence she experienced at home.

Reflecting on her life, Kahi mentioned, "I lived in Bali for about five years, and it’s been almost two years since I returned to Korea. I really love Korea." She described her time in Bali as slow-paced, saying, "Living there taught me a lot about being frugal, humble, and grateful. I realized that everything I had before was excessive, even luxurious."

Kahi also opened up about her family dynamics, revealing, "I have four siblings: an older sister, an older brother, a younger sister, and I am the third child. My mother had to send me to my grandmother's house after I was born due to a herniated disc. I grew up with my grandparents until I was three, and when I returned home, I barely recognized my mother. There was little interaction, and during that time, I didn’t feel protected."

She described her father as a successful man, tall and handsome, who worked hard enough to earn a graduate degree, while her mother was a homemaker. Kahi noted, "My father had a very authoritarian and traditional patriarchal personality. My mother was so busy raising the children and managing everything that I often felt invisible. I was always lonely and craved love."

Kahi recounted a particularly traumatic memory, stating, "My father had a violent side. I remember one day when my mother was beaten by him, and I saw blood on the blanket. I still recall that moment vividly."

She also revealed that she herself experienced violence, saying, "My siblings didn’t show me any affection, and my brother would hit me. It was normal for me to get hit. I’ve been struck with various objects, including a stick, a hose, a belt, and hangers. My brother and mother both hit me."

Despite her painful experiences, Kahi expressed understanding towards her mother, explaining, "I think my mother was overwhelmed. I was seeking the love I didn’t receive from my grandparents, which led me to act out. I was a child who often caused my mother to sigh in frustration."

Kahi reflected on her father's downfall after a business failure, saying, "He was once a proud man, but after failing in business, he couldn’t recover due to his pride. He struggled for decades without a stable income, which left him emotionally and financially drained. Looking back, I feel sorry for him and wonder if I could have lived like that."

As she shared her story, Kahi was visibly emotional, shedding tears over her childhood experiences and family history.
