Justice Minister Nominee Jeong Seong-ho Advocates for Reform Over Dismantling of Prosecution

On July 1, 2025, Jeong Seong-ho, the nominee for the Minister of Justice, arrived at his office in the Jeoksun Hyundai Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul, to prepare for his confirmation hearing. He stated, "The term 'dismantling the prosecution' is not appropriate," emphasizing the need for reforms that align with the public's expectations.

In response to questions from reporters about whether he would focus on organizational restructuring rather than dismantling the prosecution, Jeong expressed his sense of responsibility in light of the country's challenging circumstances. He stated, "I will carefully consider and prepare for prosecution reform that meets the public's expectations."

Jeong acknowledged that there is a degree of public consensus regarding the separation of investigation and prosecution, as well as the redistribution of powers concentrated within the prosecution. He noted that these issues should be resolved through discussions between the ruling and opposition parties, promising to share his views actively once appointed as minister.

However, he refrained from discussing specific legislative proposals related to prosecution reform, stating, "I have not yet reviewed the details. For now, I will focus on the confirmation hearing, and once appointed, I will examine the issues in detail and inform the public."

Jeong expressed confidence that there would be no significant backlash from within the prosecution regarding the proposed reforms. He remarked, "Aside from a very small number of politically biased prosecutors, I believe most prosecutors have a sense of responsibility and pride in serving the public. They are likely aware of the demands of the times."

Additionally, when addressing concerns about Lee Jin-soo, the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Justice, being a close associate of former President Yoon Seok-yeol, Jeong stated, "Public officials must have loyalty to the people. I have no other thoughts beyond that standard, and I do not personally know this deputy minister."
