Just B's Baein Comes Out as LGBTQ+ in Groundbreaking Interview

Baein (배인), a member of the K-pop group Just B (저스트비), has made history as the first idol in South Korea to publicly come out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. In an interview with BBC aired on June 28, 2025, he shared his thoughts on the changing societal attitudes, stating, "I believe that there may be more to gain than to lose."
Reflecting on his decision to come out, Baein revealed that some industry insiders warned him about the potential risk of losing fans. Despite these concerns, he felt compelled to be true to himself. He recognized his sexual orientation as a teenager but kept it hidden throughout his training as an idol. "I thought there were no options other than hiding it. I felt like I had to endure alone, as there was no one around me who was like me," he explained. He even questioned whether he could pursue a career as an idol at all, feeling overwhelmed by the need to conceal so much of himself.
Baein first came out to his family about three years ago. He recounted how his mother initially struggled to accept the news, expressing concerns that he might change his feelings over time and worrying about the potential hurt he might face from others. However, she ultimately reassured him, saying, "You are my son, and I love and support you." This moment was bittersweet for Baein, who felt both sadness and gratitude.
On April 23, during a world tour concert in Los Angeles, Baein publicly announced his sexual orientation. He proudly declared, "I am a member of the LGBTQ community," while performing Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" and waving a rainbow flag.
Since coming out, Baein has experienced a significant boost in confidence. He expressed, "I have changed a lot since coming out. I can now show my true self to anyone I meet from the start." However, he also noted that it is somewhat disheartening that his identity has become such a major topic. He hopes for a future where people will simply accept him as he is, without labeling him.
On the day of his announcement, several fans approached him to share their own stories of being part of the LGBTQ+ community, thanking him for his courage. Baein reflected, "By coming out, I hope to inspire others to find the courage to reveal their true selves. When they expressed their gratitude, I thought to myself, 'I should have done this sooner.'"
