Jungkook of BTS Apologizes for Controversial Hat at J-Hope's Concert

Jungkook (정국) of BTS (방탄소년단) issued an apology on June 14 after wearing a hat with an inappropriate phrase during J-Hope's (제이홉) solo concert at Goyang Sports Complex on June 13. The hat featured the phrase 'MAKE TOKYO GREAT AGAIN,' a parody of Donald Trump's campaign slogan, which some netizens interpreted as glorifying Japanese imperialism. Jungkook expressed his regret on the fan platform Weverse, stating, 'I sincerely apologize for disappointing and causing discomfort to many due to the phrase on the hat I wore during rehearsal.' This performance marked his first stage appearance since completing his military service on June 11. Following the backlash, Jungkook acknowledged his lack of awareness regarding the historical and political implications of the phrase and stated that he has disposed of the hat. He emphasized that there is no excuse for his actions and committed to being more thoughtful in the future. The hat, produced by the Japanese fashion brand Basic (베이식스), quickly sold out online after Jungkook was seen wearing it, with a retail price of 13,200 yen (approximately 125,300 won). Basic also confirmed the hat's sell-out status on their official Instagram, sharing a photo of Jungkook wearing it.
