Jung Woo-sung Resigns as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Amid Controversy

Jung Woo-sung's recent actions have sparked curiosity, especially following the controversy surrounding his extramarital child. In July, he voluntarily stepped down from his role as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Jung first became associated with the UNHCR in 2014 as an honorary ambassador and had been serving as a Goodwill Ambassador since 2015.

Known for his outspoken support for refugees, Jung has faced backlash for his candid remarks in the past. His sudden resignation has drawn significant public attention. In an interview, he explained, "I was concerned that my image was becoming too closely tied to the UNHCR Korea office. With younger, new faces emerging, I thought it might be beneficial for someone who can communicate with the mainstream generation to take on this role."

However, the timing of his resignation, coupled with the ongoing controversy regarding his extramarital child and the fact that he has not signed any advertising contracts since last year, has led some to speculate whether Jung was preparing for the fallout from the scandal.

According to industry sources, despite achieving significant success with the film 'Seoul's Spring' and becoming a top actor, Jung has not entered into any new advertising agreements since his last contract with NHN Hangame in 2022. This suggests that he may not face penalties related to contract cancellations due to his recent controversies.
