Manga is reaping the benefits of this anime boom. Kwon Moon-kyung, a PD for manga and light novels at Yes24, stated that while manga was once seen as a niche interest, the recent popularity of various anime films and series has made it a mainstream content choice, especially among the younger generation. Following the release of 'Demon Slayer' Season 1 on Netflix in 2021, the original manga's 24 volumes dominated the bestseller list in the manga and light novel category on Yes24.

In response, Starship and Jang Wonyoung obtained a court order in the U.S. to gather information from Google, successfully identifying A and filing a lawsuit for 100 million KRW in damages. This case marks a significant moment in the entertainment industry as it addresses the issue of cyberbullying by exposing anonymous perpetrators. In October 2023, the court partially ruled in favor of Jang Wonyoung, and although A appealed, the appellate court upheld the decision to pay 50 million KRW. On June 4, Jang Wonyoung's team successfully retrieved the 50 million KRW in damages and interest from the 100 million KRW that A had deposited.

Ive's Jang Wonyoung Wins Legal Battle Against Cyberbully

On June 4, a second hearing took place at the Seoul Central District Court regarding the validity of the exclusive contract between NewJeans and Ador. The court session was presided over by Chief Judge Jeong Hoe-il. Notably, NewJeans did not attend the hearing, with only their legal representatives and those from Ador present to discuss the contract issues.

The NewJeans team stated, "The trust between us and Ador has completely broken down. We have crossed a river that cannot be crossed back. We have no intention of reaching an agreement." In contrast, Ador expressed a willingness to settle, saying, "If the court provides a conclusion, we can discuss an agreement afterward."

Last November, NewJeans announced the termination of their contract with Ador due to alleged breaches. They subsequently rebranded themselves as 'NJZ' and began independent activities. However, Ador filed for a confirmation of the contract's validity, along with requests to maintain their status as the agency and to prohibit any advertising contracts.

The court granted all of Ador's requests. Following this, NewJeans filed an immediate objection and halted their activities.

On May 30, the court also approved Ador's request for indirect enforcement against NewJeans, ruling that they must not engage in independent or third-party entertainment activities without prior approval from Ador until the first-instance judgment on the contract's validity is delivered. If NewJeans violates this ruling, they will be liable to pay Ador 1 billion KRW for each violation, and if they perform as a complete group independently, they will owe 5 billion KRW at once.

The next court date is scheduled for July 24.

NewJeans Reiterates Breakup with Ador in Court Hearing

The police have recently forwarded the last sexual assault case against 정명석, the leader of JMS (Christian Gospel Mission), to the prosecution. This case involves a female member, identified as A (in her 30s), who reported that she was sexually harassed by 정명석 at a training center in Geumsan, South Chungcheong Province, between 2018 and 2020. A filed her complaint with the police two years ago, claiming she was subjected to harassment on seven occasions.

In total, 22 victims have reported sexual crimes committed by 정명석, with three cases reaching the Supreme Court for final rulings. The police confirmed that they have concluded their investigations into the sexual offenses related to 정명석. The Supreme Court has already issued a definitive 17-year prison sentence for 정명석, who was found guilty of raping a Hong Kong national member, Maple (30), and sexually assaulting an Australian national member, Amy (31), along with a Korean member, between February 2018 and September 2021.
