Judicial Representatives Condemn Violence Against Courts

The National Conference of Judges (전국법관대표회의) has issued a strong statement condemning the violent disturbances that occurred at the Seoul Western District Court on January 19. They described the actions as an infringement on the judiciary's functions and a violation of constitutional order, stating that such behavior is absolutely unacceptable.
In a temporary meeting held on January 22, the Conference expressed their commitment to uphold fair trials despite any threats, emphasizing that judges across the nation will remain steadfast in their responsibilities as mandated by the constitution and laws.
The Conference further noted that the attack on the Seoul Western District Court crossed a serious line that society cannot tolerate, causing significant harm to judicial members, including judges. They reiterated their determination to protect judicial independence under any circumstances and called for public support and attention to safeguard the judiciary's functions and the independence of judges.
Judges present at the meeting shared a collective concern about the need to prevent such incidents from recurring. However, some judges expressed hesitance in publicly stating their position, citing previous similar statements made in the Supreme Court and concerns about potential political exploitation of the situation.
