Jeong Eun-kyung Addresses Stock Controversy as Health Minister Nominee

On the morning of June 30, 2025, Jeong Eun-kyung, the nominee for Minister of Health and Welfare, arrived at her office in T Tower, located in Jung-gu, Seoul, to prepare for her confirmation hearing. Responding to questions from reporters regarding allegations that her spouse profited from investments in COVID-19 related stocks, she stated, "There are many inaccuracies in the reports." Jeong emphasized her commitment to clarifying the facts during the confirmation process, saying, "I will provide a thorough explanation to the public based on the facts."

The controversy stems from claims that her spouse purchased stocks in companies benefiting from the pandemic, such as manufacturers of diagnostic kits and masks, while Jeong was leading the country's COVID-19 response. Despite speculation that this issue might disqualify her from the ministerial position, she was nominated as the first Health Minister under the administration of President Lee Jae-myung on June 29.

In her remarks, Jeong expressed a deep sense of responsibility, stating, "I feel a heavy burden being nominated as the Minister of Health and Welfare during challenging times marked by political conflicts, an aging population, and increasing polarization. I will do my utmost to strengthen the social safety net that guarantees the basic livelihoods of all citizens and to implement healthcare reforms that reflect the voices of the public and the medical community."

When asked to evaluate the healthcare reforms of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, she acknowledged the numerous accumulated issues within the medical sector but suggested that a more comprehensive and sustainable reform plan should have been developed, particularly addressing the workforce challenges.

Regarding how she plans to engage with the medical community, Jeong noted that the primary issue causing conflict is a lack of trust. She stressed the urgency of restoring trust and cooperation with healthcare professionals.

In response to a question about potential special measures for the return of medical residents, she indicated that with recruitment scheduled for September, time is limited. She promised to assess the situation and consider the opinions of residents to explore viable options for their return.
