Jennie Opens Up About Pressure During Her First Solo Performance
On the latest episode of tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' (유 퀴즈 온 더 블럭), aired on May 7, superstar Jennie shared her experiences and challenges during her first solo performance at Coachella. After a rigorous 16-month preparation, she took the stage to perform 13 songs live for 50 minutes, captivating the audience and earning the nickname 'Jenchilla' for her remarkable presence at the 2025 Coachella festival.
When host Yoo Jae-suk asked about her current feelings, Jennie expressed a sense of relief, stating, "I think I finally felt what it means to be 'refreshing' in my life. I really feel relieved. I think I can take a break from work for a while." She candidly admitted to watching her performance video a couple of times, noting, "I usually don’t monitor myself much because I tend to get caught up in the details, but I watched a bit of Coachella. It was embarrassing, but I was proud of how genuine I was on stage."
Yoo Jae-suk was impressed by her stamina, asking how much practice it took to perform 13 songs back-to-back. Jennie revealed, "I usually struggle to perform fully during rehearsals. I feel like I have a wall when it comes to my stamina. To overcome that, I practiced by running while singing for 50 minutes whenever I could, and I also went through treatment to prepare for the stage. This performance was truly a battle with myself."
Jennie admitted to feeling significant pressure during her first solo activity, describing it as an emotional rollercoaster. "The pressure was immense. I felt like I was on a wild ride of emotions. I kept questioning myself, wondering if I could do well, and it was scary to see myself fluctuate so much emotionally."
Before stepping on stage, she reassured herself with the words, "Believe in yourself. No matter what anyone says, you must not waver. You’ve prepared enough, and you’ve worked hard. Trust in the time you’ve spent and in the people around you."
With 250,000 fans in attendance, Jennie felt overwhelmed with gratitude, saying, "I was so moved. It felt like a reward for all the preparation I had done. Looking out at the endless crowd, I felt so thankful and hopeful for the future."
When asked what the Coachella performance meant to her, Jennie reflected, "It’s a gift to my 15-year-old self. I think it was the best gift I could give myself. It’s a reward for taking that first step without knowing what to expect. I learned that enjoying what you do is the key to doing it well. I truly enjoyed Coachella and felt happy on stage. Now, I’m thinking about what I want to do next. What will be fun? I think I’ll continue living like this."
