Jang Sung-kyu Addresses Allegations Following the Death of Weathercaster Oh Yoo-anna
Following the tragic passing of weathercaster Oh Yoo-anna, Jang Sung-kyu has issued a detailed statement in response to accusations of being a bystander. On February 11, he shared on his social media that he initially intended to wait until the family found peace before speaking out. However, he was encouraged by the family to clarify his position due to concerns about facing secondary victimization.
Oh Yoo-anna, who worked as a weathercaster for MBC since 2021, passed away on September 15, 2024. Her family revealed that she had suffered bullying from senior weathercasters, sought therapy at over ten psychiatric facilities, and left behind 17 letters. The individuals implicated in the bullying include Lee Hyun-seung, Kim Ga-young, Park Ha-myung, and Choi Ah-ri.
Jang Sung-kyu faced backlash after claims emerged that he had facilitated Oh Yoo-anna's suicide due to his friendship with Kim Ga-young. A YouTube channel, 'Garo-Setro Research Institute,' even accused him of lacking remorse for allegedly sharing Oh's struggles with her seniors. In his defense, Jang stated that he had introduced Oh as a junior to Kim Ga-young, who he believed cared for her. He recounted that after listening to Oh's concerns, he felt his support alone was insufficient and suggested that Kim Ga-young assist her. However, Kim Ga-young cited work-related issues that made it difficult for her to help.
Jang emphasized that he never conveyed any negative remarks about Oh to anyone, nor did he engage in conversations that could be construed as harmful. He expressed regret for not taking more proactive measures at the time, believing that Oh was handling her challenges with resilience.
He reiterated that he was not a perpetrator or bystander, as they had exchanged friendly messages, including recommendations for restaurants shortly before her passing. Jang concluded his statement by offering condolences to Oh's family and pledging to take legal action against anyone who crosses boundaries with him or his family.
In his full statement, Jang expressed deep sorrow for the loss and reiterated his commitment to support the family in any way possible, while also addressing the need for legal recourse against those who have overstepped their bounds.
