Jang Dong-hyuk Promises to Visit Former President Yoon if Elected Party Leader

Jang Dong-hyuk, a member of the People Power Party, announced on July 31 that he would visit former President Yoon Suk-yeol if he becomes the party leader. During a joint broadcast with conservative YouTubers including Jeon Han-gil, Go Seong-guk, Seong Chang-gyeong, and Kang Yong-seok, Jang addressed accusations of extremism, stating that such claims are attempts by the left to divide them. He expressed uncertainty about the calls to sever ties with Yoon, emphasizing the need for a clear stance if Yoon's trial is deemed unfair. Jang noted that while visits to Yoon are currently restricted, he would seek to meet him at an appropriate time if elected. He also commented on the issue of martial law, asserting that it equates to insurrection and that if martial law is deemed wrong, impeachment should follow. Regarding the 'Yoon Again' movement, he stated that he would firmly support the strengthening of liberal democracy post-martial law. Jang criticized those within his party who label him as far-right, suggesting that those unwilling to unite against the Lee Jae-myung administration should leave the party. He explained his split from former leader Han Dong-hoon, stating that he could not support the impeachment of a president they had elected. Looking ahead to the local elections next year, he emphasized the importance of collaborating with other conservative parties, even if they do not merge. On President Lee Jae-myung, Jang expressed that he believes Lee's biggest risk is not legal issues but rather his foreign policy, which he views as a threat to South Korea. Addressing allegations of election fraud, Jang promised to create a public forum for discussion and to advocate for changes in voting procedures. His appearance on YouTube is seen as a strategy to appeal to the party's hardline supporters ahead of the upcoming party convention. Former Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo, who opposed impeachment, is also considering attending a candidate debate hosted by the group on August 3.
