James Gunn Discusses Korean Cinema at Superman Live Conference

Director James Gunn, known for his work on 'Superman', recently spoke about the influence of Korean cinema during a live conference held on July 3 at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Seoul. The event featured Gunn alongside cast members David Corenswet (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor).
The film 'Superman' is a major superhero action blockbuster that showcases the iconic character battling formidable foes intent on destroying the world. This project marks Gunn's new role as the head of DC Studios, where he has taken on both directing and writing responsibilities.
During the conference, Gunn shared his reasons for choosing to direct 'Superman', stating, "There are both complex and simple reasons. The simple reason is that before I came to DC, I felt it was important to start with Superman, as he is the archetype of heroes. I found this character fascinating and believed he would make a great hero. Plus, I just really love Superman."
When asked about inspirations from other works, he mentioned, "There are actually many films that have inspired me. I have a lot I want to showcase in this movie, especially in theaters. I aimed to create a universe that people can enjoy together while watching Superman on the big screen. I utilized various technical aspects to ensure that audiences can truly feel the emotional depth of the film."
Gunn also expressed his admiration for Korea, saying, "Korea is one of my favorite countries. There are many outstanding directors here who have influenced me. I have been greatly inspired by films from Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea. My friend Jay, who is also a director, has been influenced by Korean cinema, especially in terms of action. I am grateful for the wonderful films that are part of the Korean culture that you all enjoy."
