IU's Online Harasser Fined 3 Million Won for Defamation

A woman in her 30s, identified as A, has been fined 3 million won for defaming singer IU. The ruling was made by Judge Lee Kyung-sun at the Seoul Central District Court on December 3, 2024. The court stated that the comments made by A were deemed insulting and contemptuous based on their context. A was charged for posting four derogatory comments in April 2022, criticizing IU's clothing and singing abilities. During the trial, A claimed that her mental health issues affected her writing skills and argued that her comments were merely personal opinions rather than attempts to harm IU's reputation. However, the court rejected this defense, emphasizing that the expressions used were still considered insulting, regardless of her mental health condition. Meanwhile, IU is set to star in the upcoming MBC drama '21세기 대군 부인' (tentative title), where she will co-star with Byun Woo-seok. The drama is a romantic story set in a constitutional monarchy in the 21st century, focusing on a wealthy woman frustrated by her commoner status and a prince who has nothing to his name.
