IU Wins Defamation Lawsuit Against Accuser

On December 18, 2024, singer IU (아이유) achieved a legal victory in her defamation lawsuit against an individual identified as A, who had previously accused her of plagiarism. The Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Judge Lee Geon-hee, ruled in favor of IU, ordering A to pay 30 million KRW in damages.
Last year, in May, IU was reported to have been accused by A of violating copyright laws. A claimed that several of IU's songs, including 'Pink Shoes' (분홍신), 'Good Day' (좋은 날), 'BBIBBI' (삐삐), 'Pitiful' (가여워), 'Boo' (부), and 'Celebrity' (셀러브리티), contained elements plagiarized from both domestic and international artists.
However, A is not the original creator of the works in question but rather a private citizen. IU's representatives argued that the accusations were baseless and aimed solely at tarnishing her image, especially since some composers had already stated that there was no plagiarism involved. They expressed confidence that the investigative authorities would make a fair judgment regarding the unfounded claims and indicated that they would hold A accountable for the reckless allegations.
In August of the same year, the police dismissed A's complaint, and IU's agency, EDAM Entertainment, filed a lawsuit in September against A for defamation in the Seoul Central District Court. It was reported that IU's legal team was able to identify A's personal details through the court. Despite the lawsuit, A has not appointed legal representation and has remained unresponsive, leading the court to proceed with the case through public notification methods.
