IU Selected as Korea's Representative for Billboard's Global No. 1 Artist Series

Top singer and actress IU (이지은) has been chosen as Korea's representative for Billboard's 'Global No. 1 Artist Series.' On December 17, Billboard announced this collaboration with Billboard Korea in an article titled 'IU's Success: An Unprecedented Achievement for Female K-Pop Solo Artists.'

Billboard praised IU, stating, 'She is irreplaceable. While there are many popular idols, talented musicians, and skilled actors, no one else can excel in all these areas simultaneously like IU.' The article highlighted the unwavering love that K-Pop fans, as well as Korean music enthusiasts, have for IU, noting her cross-generational appeal that spans from younger to older audiences, which is evident in her musical achievements and performances.

The analysis of her chart and world tour successes this year was also noteworthy. Billboard remarked, 'IU showcased an overwhelming presence on the 2024 charts. Her song 'Love Wins All' reached number one on the Melon Top 100 chart just one hour after its release, maintaining the top spot for four consecutive weeks, achieving the number one position on the February monthly chart, and recording an impressive 339 perfect all-kills on the iChart.'

Regarding her world tour, Billboard reported, 'IU set a record for the largest world tour by a female solo artist in Korea, attracting around 500,000 fans across 31 performances in 12 countries. She became the first female artist to perform at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, drawing 107,000 fans over two days, and the first female artist to perform at all major stadiums in Korea.'

Looking ahead, IU plans to focus on her acting career next year, with the Netflix series 'Bokssak Sogassuda' set to premiere soon. She is also filming a new MBC TV drama titled '21st Century Grand Duchess (tentative title)' while continuing her music projects.

In a Q&A with Billboard, IU discussed the advantages and challenges of being a solo artist in the Korean music industry, stating, 'One challenge is that there is no one to share energy with on stage. In a group, each member has distinct roles that create a synergy that is hard to replicate as a solo artist. However, I get to enjoy all the love and attention by myself.'

When asked about the differentiation of Korean artists on the Billboard charts, she noted, 'The most prominent aspect is how K-Pop groups maintain their individuality while being deeply respected by fans. I believe that the unique identities of each group make them special.'

IU also expressed her openness to collaborating with global artists, stating, 'In the past, I received many amazing offers but was afraid to work with artists who speak different languages. Now, I am much more open to the idea.'

Reflecting on her strong bond with fans, she shared, 'Initially, most of my fans were older than me, and I often felt cared for and protected by them. Now, many fans are around my age, and we have grown together. I want to support and encourage my younger fans.'

When asked about her appeal across generations, IU remarked, 'I think I appear relatively ordinary compared to other notable stars in Korea, which makes me more relatable. The support I receive reflects my consistent efforts.'

She recalled memorable moments from her overseas performances, particularly in Auckland, New Zealand, and Jakarta, Indonesia, where the audience's enthusiasm left a lasting impression on her.

As for balancing her meticulousness and flexibility, IU said, 'I often find myself at a crossroads. I like to plan thoroughly, but I’ve learned that things rarely go perfectly. Over time, I’ve practiced adaptability, which has helped me protect my mental well-being.'

Looking forward to next year, IU expressed excitement about her upcoming Netflix drama and a new project with a different vibe, assuring fans that they won’t have to wait long for new music.
