Investigation Reveals Mechanical Failure in Fatal Helicopter Crash in Yangyang

A tragic helicopter crash occurred on November 27, 2022, near Myongju Temple in the mountainous area of Yangyang County, Gangwon Province, resulting in the deaths of all five occupants, including the pilot and a mechanic. The helicopter, an S-58T, was conducting flights for forest fire prevention when it lost speed and began to spin to the right before crashing.

According to the report from the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Committee under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the abnormal rightward rotation of the helicopter prior to the crash was identified as a typical symptom of a malfunction in the rotor system. The investigation pointed to issues with the tail rotor's rotation or pitch control as the likely cause of the accident.

An acoustic spectrum study commissioned by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) indicated that the tail rotor, which is responsible for counteracting lateral forces, appeared to have ceased functioning before the crash.

Further analysis of engine debris revealed no mechanical issues with the engine, and the fuel used was found to meet required standards. The pilot's qualifications and health were also deemed satisfactory, and the helicopter had undergone maintenance in accordance with regulatory procedures.

In light of these findings, the investigation committee has recommended enhanced oversight for the helicopter operator, the Seoul Regional Aviation Administration, and Gangwon Province.

The incident took place at 10:49 AM, and the helicopter was operated by the cities of Sokcho and Yangyang, as well as Goseong County, for fire prevention broadcasts. The victims included the 71-year-old pilot and a 54-year-old mechanic, among others.
