Investigation Launched Following Diver's Death at Ulsan Shipyard

Authorities from the Ulsan Coast Guard and the Ministry of Employment and Labor have conducted a search of HD Hyundai Mipo's Ulsan shipyard and its subcontractor in connection with the tragic death of a 22-year-old diver. On January 23, investigators, including forensic experts from the Southern Regional Coast Guard, executed a search warrant at the safety management department and the CEO's office of HD Hyundai Mipo, deploying around ten investigators. A search was also carried out at the subcontractor based in Busan, to which the deceased diver, identified as Kim (김모), belonged. Reports indicate that approximately ten inspectors from the Ministry of Employment and Labor participated in the operation.

The incident occurred on December 30, when Kim was deployed for an underwater inspection near the first pier of the HD Hyundai Mipo shipyard in Ulsan. After four hours underwater, he was recovered by the fire department and coast guard but was unfortunately pronounced dead. The coast guard is currently investigating the CEO of HD Hyundai Mipo, the subcontractor's representative, and two safety managers for possible charges of negligent homicide, alleging that they failed to fulfill their duty of care during Kim's diving operation. The Ministry of Employment and Labor is also looking into potential violations of the Serious Accident Punishment Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
