Investigation into Marine Corps Lobbying Allegations Continues

On July 7, Special Prosecutor Jeong Min-young (정민영) held a press briefing at the Marine Corps Special Investigation Office in Seocho-gu, Seoul. The investigation is focused on allegations surrounding former Marine Corps 1st Division Commander Lim Seong-geun (임성근) and his purported lobbying efforts to secure favorable outcomes in a case involving deceased Marines. The Special Investigation Team is also looking into the actions of former Marine Corps Commander Kim Gye-hwan (김계환), who has been accused of exerting pressure on the investigation. On July 22, a court denied a request for an arrest warrant for Kim, citing no risk of evidence tampering. Additionally, it was revealed that Lim Seong-geun had a 14-minute phone conversation with Ahn Gyu-baek (안규백) on the day the case was transferred in August 2023, raising further questions about the integrity of the investigation.
