Investigation into Kim Geon-hee's Alleged Influence in Financial Appointments

The special investigation team led by Min Jung-ki is currently probing allegations surrounding Kim Geon-hee, the spouse of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. Reports indicate that the investigation is focusing on connections between key figures in Kim's circle, referred to as the 'Hannam-dong Line,' and Jeon Seong-bae, known as 'Geonjin Beopsa,' regarding potential influence in financial sector appointments.

According to our findings, in 2023, Financial Group A was preparing to select a new chairman, with indications that the presidential office aimed to position an individual from within the company in this role. While most domestic financial groups have been privatized, government influence remains significant.

However, a senior official from the financial authorities expressed concerns that the candidate was unsuitable for the position of chairman of a major financial holding company, leading to the individual being excluded from the final list of candidates. Months later, the same individual was again mentioned as a potential representative for a subsidiary of Group A, but this was also thwarted by opposition from both the financial authorities and within Group A itself. Ultimately, the individual left Group A in the latter half of last year. The special investigation team has identified that the presidential office channel involved in this case is linked to a close aide of Kim Geon-hee, referred to as Secretary C. This secretary has had ties with Kim since before Yoon's presidency and served in the presidential office for three years, although not in an economic or financial capacity. A source from the financial sector noted, 'There were many discussions suggesting that Secretary C was acting outside of their official duties, reflecting Kim Geon-hee's intentions,' adding that the senior official who raised concerns about the candidate's suitability even considered resigning in protest.

The investigation team is also examining allegations that Jeon Seong-bae was involved in personnel matters at Financial Group B. It is alleged that D, a candidate for the chairmanship of Group B, approached Jeon during the selection process to request assistance in securing the position. D reportedly made contact through an individual who played a key role in Jeon's 'Yangjae Camp' during the 20th presidential election. These allegations were reportedly submitted to the presidential office in the form of an anonymous tip at the end of last year.

Furthermore, the investigation team has uncovered evidence suggesting Jeon may have been involved in prosecutorial appointments. Previously, the prosecution obtained Jeon's mobile phone, which contained text messages requesting personnel favors for a current prosecutor, identified as Kim. The messages reportedly included Kim's name, date of birth, and position, along with the honorific phrase 'I humbly request.' In a conversation with us, Prosecutor Kim stated, 'I don't even know who Jeon is, and I have not made any requests through others. This is completely unfounded.' A representative from the special investigation team commented, 'We are thoroughly examining various allegations related to personnel matters involving Kim Geon-hee.'
