Interview with Kim Ye-bun, Head of Celebrity Charity Organization 'The Bridge'

On June 9, Kim Ye-bun (52), the head of the celebrity charity organization 'The Bridge', visited a basement apartment in Seonbu-dong, Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, where a Ugandan woman named Maya (37) lives with her two young sons, Israel (6) and Cairo (2). The apartment was in disrepair, with a broken window letting in rainwater and a musty smell permeating the air. Maya fled to Korea seven years ago due to religious persecution and has been struggling since her husband was deported a few years back.

Kim, who was crowned Miss Korea in 1994, quickly transitioned into a successful career in broadcasting, hosting popular shows like SBS's 'Live Broadcast: Run, Koba!' and becoming a well-known figure in the entertainment industry. However, in 1998, she unexpectedly left for the U.S. to study English, stepping away from the spotlight.

In January 2017, she founded 'The Bridge' to connect marginalized communities with support, inspired by a friend's suggestion during her missionary work. Over the years, the organization has grown to include around 30 members, providing aid to various groups, including the homeless and single mothers.

During her recent visit, Kim brought new clothes for Cairo, which she had collected during a charity bazaar. She expressed her desire to improve Maya's living conditions, suggesting renovations to the apartment.

Despite facing challenges in fundraising, including a lack of consistent sponsors, Kim has organized successful charity concerts featuring well-known artists who volunteered their time, raising significant funds for various causes. She emphasized the importance of community support and the joy of giving back, stating that her past experiences have made her more empathetic towards others' struggles.

Kim continues to balance her charity work with multiple business roles, including managing a small entertainment agency. She remains grateful for her past as a public figure but is focused on her current mission to help those in need, hoping to be remembered fondly as a star who made a difference.
