Im Young-woong's DM Controversy Sparks Outrage Over Political Comments

The controversy surrounding Im Young-woong's direct message (DM) has escalated significantly. On December 7, amidst the political turmoil following President Yoon Suk-yeol's declaration of a state of emergency, Im posted a celebratory message for his dog's birthday. This prompted a netizen, referred to as A, to send him a DM questioning his actions. A claimed to have received dismissive replies from Im, such as 'What do you mean?' and 'Am I a politician? Why should I care?'

Initially, it was reported that the DM originated from a popular variety show producer, but that producer later clarified that they had never sent a message to Im. It was subsequently revealed that the original post came from a member of a well-known female-centric online community, notorious for its radical feminist views and political biases.

Adding to the confusion, A deleted their post, and neither Im nor his agency, Fish Music, has provided a clear statement regarding the authenticity of the DM. Despite this uncertainty, public criticism of Im has intensified.

Culinary columnist Hwang Kyo-ik and cultural critic Kim Gap-soo voiced strong disapproval on the podcast 'Mae Bul Show' on December 9, arguing that Im's indifference to the state of emergency reflects a lack of civic awareness. Kim stated, 'To remain neutral during a declaration of martial law is akin to saying, 'Isn't it okay if a massacre occurs somewhere?' He concluded that Im lacks the qualifications to be considered a Korean citizen.' In response, fellow commentator Choi Wook expressed his disdain for Im, stating he has no desire to associate with him.

However, Kim's previous controversial remarks, including defending actors embroiled in bullying scandals and welcoming the return of a figure accused of sexual harassment, have drawn mixed reactions from the public.

While some have shown support for Im, suggesting his actions were hasty, many others feel that the situation is escalating beyond reasonable bounds. Comments such as 'It seems like Im initially made a mistake, but now it feels like the backlash is excessive' and 'If it turns out Im did say those things, the criticism will be justified' have surfaced. Concerns have also been raised about the potential consequences if it is revealed that the accusations against Im are unfounded.

In light of the controversy, one netizen has filed a complaint with the Pocheon City National Petition Office, urging a review of Im's role as an ambassador, citing that if his comments can be interpreted as suggesting 'only politicians can make political statements,' it contradicts the constitutional principle that sovereignty resides with the people.

If it is confirmed that Im made the controversial remarks, he will undoubtedly face backlash for his apparent lack of historical awareness. However, if he is indeed a victim of misinformation, the question remains: who will be held accountable for the ensuing mob mentality and personal attacks? It is time to halt the excessive personal attacks and witch hunts.
