Im Young-woong Remains Silent Amid DM Controversy; Pocheon City Denies Rumors of Dismissal

Im Young-woong (임영웅), the popular singer currently embroiled in a DM controversy related to the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol, has not been dismissed as the promotional ambassador for Pocheon City. On December 9, Pocheon City officials confirmed to OSEN that there have been no discussions or considerations regarding his dismissal.

The controversy began on December 7 when Im Young-woong posted a birthday message for his dog on social media, coinciding with nationwide protests calling for the president's impeachment. A netizen expressed disappointment over his silence on political matters, to which Im responded, "Am I a politician? Why should I speak out?"

While some argue that celebrities are not obligated to express their political views, many criticized Im for appearing indifferent given the current political climate. Conversely, others pointed out that the initial DM from the netizen seemed malicious.

As of now, Im Young-woong has not issued any formal statement regarding the situation. Amidst these developments, a media outlet reported that Pocheon City was considering his dismissal as an ambassador. Im was appointed as Pocheon’s ambassador in July 2019, promoting the city’s attractions, local products, and seasonal festivals.

In response to the rumors, Pocheon City reiterated, "We have not discussed or reviewed his dismissal. We will consider the situation once the facts are confirmed."

Meanwhile, Im Young-woong is set to hold his 'Im Young-woong Recital' at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul starting December 27.
