Im Young-woong and Cha Eun-woo Face Backlash Amid Impeachment Protests

As protests demanding the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol escalate across South Korea, attention has turned to celebrities and their social media activity. On December 7, a candlelight vigil was held in front of the National Assembly in Yeouido, where numerous stars, including Go Min-si, Ko Hyun-jung, Lee Dong-wook, and B1A4's Gongchan, took to social media to express their support for the demonstrators.
However, some netizens have criticized celebrities who have chosen to remain silent or post non-political content during this tumultuous time. Im Young-woong, for instance, shared a birthday message for his dog, Si-wol, on his social media, which drew ire from some users who felt it was inappropriate given the current political climate. A post claiming to be a direct message exchange with Im Young-woong further fueled the backlash, with one user questioning his lack of engagement in the political discourse.
In response to the criticism, Im Young-woong reportedly replied, "Am I a politician? Why should I speak out?" This exchange has sparked a heated debate online, with some suggesting that the criticism may be exaggerated or manipulated. Attempts to reach Im Young-woong's agency, Fish Music, for clarification have gone unanswered.
Similarly, Cha Eun-woo faced backlash after posting fashion photos on his social media, with comments questioning the appropriateness of his posts during the impeachment crisis. Other celebrities, including Han So-hee and Kim Yuna, who attended a luxury brand event on December 6, have also been criticized for their silence on the matter.
Online communities have begun compiling lists of celebrities who have not publicly supported the impeachment protests, intensifying the scrutiny. However, many netizens express concern that this situation resembles a form of censorship, arguing that public figures should not be compelled to voice their opinions on political matters.
Critics argue that directing anger towards celebrities rather than the actual political leaders is misguided. They warn that continued pressure and criticism could lead to increased resentment and distort the purpose of the protests. In these challenging times, maintaining a sense of normalcy is crucial for individuals to sustain their energy and continue advocating for change. Excessive criticism of those who choose to remain silent or focus on their personal lives should be reconsidered.
